Before condos lined the coast, before traffic stacked up on Boynton Beach Boulevard, and before the city became one of South Florida’s most recognizable places to live, Boynton Beach was something far quieter and far more uncertain. It was farmland. Not glamorous. Not easy. Just raw opportunity, sandy soil, and a handful of determined people betting that this stretch of coastal Florida could become something more.

And they were right. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, settlers arrived in what would become Boynton Beach drawn by promise, possibility, and the belief that the land could provide. What they found was not an instant paradise. The soil was sandy. The heat was intense. The weather could be unpredictable and unforgiving. But through trial, error, and stubborn persistence, early farmers figured out what could survive here and what could thrive.

A few crops quickly rose to the top. Pineapples became one of the area’s earliest commercial success stories, helping put Boynton on the map during Florida’s agricultural rise. Tomatoes became especially valuable as a winter crop, shipped north when colder states could not produce their own. Beans and peppers helped feed local families and support the local economy. Citrus groves also played a role, adding to the region’s agricultural identity, even if they were only one piece of a much larger picture.

Back then, the Boynton Beach we know today barely existed. What are now major roads like Federal Highway, Seacrest Boulevard, and areas along the coastal ridge west of A1A were once little more than sandy tracks running through farmland. Instead of retail plazas and neighborhoods, there were rows of crops. Instead of constant traffic, there were wagons, workers, and long days in the Florida sun.

Then came the breakthrough that changed everything: the Florida East Coast Railway. That railway turned local farming into real economic power. Farmers packed vegetables into wooden crates and hauled them to small depots and packing houses near the tracks. From there, Boynton-grown produce traveled north to major cities like New York, delivering fresh winter crops to markets that had little else like it. That was not just local agriculture. That was one of South Florida’s earliest true economic engines.

You can almost picture it. The thud of crates being stacked. The whistle of trains arriving at dawn. Workers sorting, packing, and loading produce by hand. Packing houses buzzing during harvest season. Simple wooden homes standing near the fields, raised just enough to avoid flooding, cooled not by air conditioning but by ocean breezes and resilience. This was not easy living. It was demanding, physical, uncertain work. And it shaped the character of the community.

Boynton’s location helped. The coastal ridge offered slightly higher elevation and better drainage than the wetter lands farther west. But even that advantage came with no guarantees. Sudden cold snaps could wipe out crops overnight. Hurricanes and flooding were constant threats. Every season carried risk. Yet the people here adapted, endured, and kept growing.

That matters, because Boynton Beach did not begin as a master-planned idea or a polished development pitch. It began as effort. It began as people waking early, working long hours, taking risks, and building something row by row.

The Boynton Beach people know today was built on foundations that were practical, hardworking, and deeply tied to the land. That history still shows up in ways many residents may not even notice.

Some of the city’s road patterns trace old agricultural lines. Certain open spaces still hint at the landscape that came before the subdivisions. The very shape of modern Boynton, in some places, still follows the footprint of its farming past. More importantly, that past tells residents something about the city’s identity.

Boynton Beach has always been a place of transition. It has always been changing. But change is not new here. Reinvention is part of the city’s DNA. The difference is that earlier generations were transforming farmland into a working community, while today Boynton is navigating what it means to be a growing city in a crowded, fast-changing South Florida.

That raises a bigger question: what does the future look like? If the past is any guide, Boynton Beach will keep evolving. Growth will continue. Development will continue. Roads will get busier. More people will move in. More pressure will be placed on housing, infrastructure, and the city’s sense of identity. But the future of Boynton should not be built by forgetting what came before. It should be built by understanding it.

Because when residents know that this city grew from rows of pineapples, winter tomatoes, modest homes, packing houses, and train depots, they see Boynton differently. They see that this was never just another South Florida stop on the map. It was a working town. A producing town. A place that helped feed people far beyond its borders.

And maybe that is the real lesson. Boynton Beach was not created overnight. It was earned. Built slowly. Built stubbornly. Built by people who believed something could grow here, even when the odds were far from certain. That same spirit still matters now.

As the city continues to grow, the challenge for Boynton Beach residents is not just to welcome the future, but to shape it wisely. To preserve the stories that made this place. To recognize that beneath the pavement, the plazas, and the neighborhoods is older ground, and a deeper history. Before Boynton Beach became a place people moved to, it was a place people worked for. And that is still part of what makes it special today.

A long-dismissed idea is back on the table. Boynton Beach officials have signaled renewed interest in widening the Boynton Inlet and replacing its 51-year-old fixed bridge with a drawbridge. The current bridge limits vessel height, restricting marine activity and waterfront growth. A replacement could boost property values, expand tourism, and improve water flow. However, a 2009 proposal was rejected over flooding concerns - issues that still weigh heavily on any future plans.

For residents, the stakes are real. A wider inlet could improve ocean rescue response times and create a safer waterway. But this is no small undertaking, requiring coordination across state, federal, and coastal agencies. For now, it remains a “vision item” but one with significant implications for Boynton’s waterfront future.

It started with two sisters, a parking lot, and a vision. Six months later, the Good Day Market has become one of Boynton Beach’s most quietly beloved Sunday traditions — and it’s just getting started.

Michelle and Stephanie launched the Good Day Market in mid-October 2025, setting up shop every other Sunday in the parking lot in front of Dillard’s at the Boynton Beach Mall. They aren’t just the organizers - they’re vendors themselves, which means they understand the market from both sides of the table. That perspective shows. In just six months, they’ve built something that feels less like a pop-up event and more like a genuine community gathering.

On any given Sunday, between 30 and 50 vendors - sometimes more - spread out across the lot, selling everything from food and candy to flowers, handmade crafts, jewelry, clothing, and gifts. A couple of food trucks are usually on site, and parking is free, ample, and steps from the action. It’s the kind of relaxed, unhurried Sunday morning experience that Boynton Beach has been missing.

What makes the Good Day Market work isn’t just the vendors - it’s the personality behind it. The sisters keep things fresh by giving each market its own identity. Easter Sunday’s edition was dubbed the “Dog Day Market,” where attendees were encouraged to bring their dogs along. It’s a small touch, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that turns a one-time visit into a standing appointment on the calendar.

The market originally ran on alternating Sundays between Boynton Beach and Delray Beach, giving vendors and shoppers two locations to choose from. But construction at the Delray site forced that location to close, making Boynton Beach the sole home of the Good Day Market for now. Rather than slow them down, the change has sharpened their focus. Michelle and Stephanie say the past six months have brought real growth and stability — no small feat for an outdoor market finding its footing in a crowded events landscape.

But there’s a plot twist on the horizon. Their contract with the Boynton Beach Mall expires next month, in May, and the sisters are uncertain whether they’ll be able to stay at their current location. They’d like to remain — the parking lot in front of Dillard’s has proven to be a natural fit, with easy access, visibility, and plenty of space. If the mall doesn’t renew, they’re prepared to move rather than fold. And if the right opportunity presents itself, they’re actively looking to expand.

That resilience is worth noting. Outdoor markets live and die by logistics, weather, and foot traffic, and most don’t make it past their first season. The Good Day Market has not only survived — it’s grown. The sisters have done it without a flashy marketing budget or a prime downtown address, just word of mouth, consistency, and a genuine love for what they’re building.

For Boynton Beach, that matters. As the city pours millions into redeveloping its downtown and waterfront, grassroots community anchors like the Good Day Market are exactly the kind of organic energy that makes a place feel alive. You can’t manufacture it. It either happens or it doesn’t.

And right now, it’s happening. Every other Sunday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Good Day Market is proof that Boynton Beach has the community spirit to support something real. Whatever comes next - a renewed contract, a new location, or an expanded footprint - Michelle and Stephanie have already built something worth following. Most people drive through Boynton’s now-busy streets and have never set foot on its beautiful preserves. But Boynton Beach’s best-kept secrets are free, and they’re open seven days a week. While Boynton is being built up at an extraordinary pace, untouched land where the air is cleaner and the wildlife is uninhibited still remains. For now.

Tucked between the sprawl, from the eastern scrublands to the western wetlands, are some of Palm Beach County’s most stunning natural spaces - and most of them cost nothing to visit. Before the summer heat makes being outside unbearable, here are three spots worth getting off the couch for.

Green Cay Wetlands — Western Boynton Beach 12800 Hagen Ranch Rd

A 1.5-mile boardwalk winding across 100 acres of ponds and marsh, Green Cay is one of the most rewarding wildlife walks in South Florida - and it’s completely free. Herons, anhingas, and alligators are regular sightings. Parking is free, restrooms are on site, and it’s fully ADA compliant. It’s also getting bigger. Seacrest Scrub Natural Area — Eastern Boynton Beach 3400 S. Seacrest Blvd

You wouldn’t expect to find a quiet, shaded 54-acre nature preserve minutes from the beach - but here it is. Seacrest Scrub offers a network of trails through native Florida scrub habitat, where gopher tortoises roam freely and the noise of the city disappears almost instantly. Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge — Western Boynton Beach 10216 Lee Rd (off SR-441 behind Bedner’s)

This one is in a different league entirely. One of the largest wildlife refuges in the country, Arthur Marshall Wildlife Refuge covers over 145,000 acres of raw Florida wilderness. Walking and cycling access is free. Car entry runs $10 per day or an annual pass for unlimited visits. A visitor center, shaded boardwalk, and year-round events make it approachable for first-timers, while miles of trails reward those who want to go deeper. Florida’s HOA laws got a major overhaul and 2026 is the first year the rules actually have teeth. The backbone of the reform is HB1203, which forces HOAs statewide to open their books, expand record access, and launch online portals for larger communities. Boards that were once able to operate in the shadows now face real accountability and legal risk. In Boynton Beach, this hits close to home. An estimated 55–70% of local Boynton residents live under an HOA - well above the state average - meaning more people here are directly affected than almost anywhere else in Florida.

The bigger shake-up almost happened. HB657 passed the Florida House 108–2 and would have allowed HOAs to be legally dissolved, strengthened conflict-of-interest rules, and created a dedicated court process for disputes. Then it landed in a Senate committee - and died without a single hearing or vote. That won’t be the end of it. The bill is widely expected to return in 2027, and when it does pass, it could fundamentally shift power away from boards and back to the residents they’re supposed to represent. For anyone living in a Boynton Beach HOA, that’s a future worth watching.

Ocean One Just Got Real

After months as nothing more than a vision, Boynton Beach’s most-watched oceanfront project has secured construction financing and that changes everything. In today’s brutal lending environment, especially for coastal luxury condos, financing is the hardest wall to clear. Ocean One just cleared it. The project is a boutique, design-forward luxury condominium on the Atlantic - intimate by design, with direct beach access along one of the city’s least congested stretches of shoreline. Think high-end, smaller-scale, and nothing like the towers dominating Boca or Delray. For eastern Boynton Beach, this is a signal. For years, the running joke about Boynton Beach was simple: three exits off I-95 and nothing to stop for. City leaders have heard it long enough. Now they’re doing something about it. The Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency is executing an ambitious strategy to transform the city’s downtown and waterfront into destinations worth seeking out — think Delray Beach’s Atlantic Avenue energy, but with Boynton’s own identity. Leading the charge is CRA Executive Director Christopher Brown, who previously helped reshape both Delray Beach and Pompano Beach, and has now set his sights on Boynton.

The moves are already happening. The CRA recently paid $6.8 million for 1.24 acres next to Harvey E. Oyer Jr. Park, with plans to expand the waterfront experience - think dining on the water, more docks, and public gathering spaces that give residents and visitors a reason to linger. Near Boynton Harbor Marina, planners are eyeing a four-story mixed-use building with ground-floor restaurants, retail, and residential units above. And at Exit 57 off I-95, where the Inn at Boynton Beach once stood, the city has purchased the property and 14 surrounding parcels to create a redesigned gateway corridor that actually invites travelers in rather than sending them straight through.

The heart of it all is Ocean Avenue. City leaders want it to become Boynton’s answer to Atlantic Avenue - a lively, walkable restaurant and entertainment district anchored by genuine history. The 1927 Arts & Cultural Center and the 1913 Schoolhouse Children’s Museum give Boynton something Delray had to manufacture: authenticity. A second phase of the Villages at East Ocean Avenue project could even restore the historic 1907 Andrews House and convert it into a café, weaving the city’s oldest surviving home into its newest chapter. Major projects including Ocean One, The Pierce, and Town Square are already approved. The Villages at East Ocean Avenue is under construction and expected to deliver in 2027.

The CRA is also exploring up to $30 million in bond funding to acquire additional key properties and position them for private redevelopment.

This isn’t a distant dream anymore. The money is being spent, the properties are being bought, and the vision is taking shape block by block. Boynton Beach is building toward something and the window to watch it happen, invest in it, or simply enjoy it, is opening right now.

Florida condo owners have been battered by soaring insurance costs, skyrocketing association fees, and strict reserve requirements - but relief may be on the way. The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) is proposing new rules through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that could ease the burden considerably. The biggest changes: condo buildings can now use cheaper actual cash value coverage for roofs rather than costly full replacement policies, and per-unit deductibles are capped at $50,000. Associations also get more flexibility in how they structure coverage overall. The ripple effect could mean lower monthly fees, more affordable buildings, and more units qualifying for conventional financing.

This will reopen the doors for buyers who were previously locked out. The catch - Florida’s strict Structural Integrity Reserve Study (SIRS) requirements remain firmly in place and take precedence over any federal changes. These FHFA updates help around the edges, but they’re no magic fix. Owners should also note that beginning January 2027, associations must allocate 15% of annual income to capital expenses, up from 10%. Smart buyers should prioritize SIRS-compliant buildings, which are best positioned for both state and federal compliance - and represent the strongest investments in today’s complicated market.

What if the Boynton Beach you think you know isn’t the same city it was even a few years ago? Behind the familiar streets and growing developments, something much bigger is happening. With a population now topping 84,000, Boynton Beach is quietly transforming into one of the most diverse and rapidly evolving cities in South Florida. Today, the community reflects a rich mix of backgrounds that breaks down like this: roughly 44% to 52% White (including Hispanic White), 30% to 33% Black or African American, and 13% to 17% Hispanic or Latino. Alongside those backgrounds exist a growing number of Asian and Caribbean residents.

In fact, nearly 30% of Boytnon residents were born outside the United States, bringing new cultures, businesses, and energy into the city. This shift isn’t just visible. It’s shaping everything from local restaurants to community events to the future of the workforce. These changes aren’t just cultural, they’re historical. In 2024, Boynton Beach formally removed outdated, century-old segregation-era laws from its books. This was an important symbolic step toward modernization and many progressive cities have been following suit. For a city with deep roots, it was a clear signal: Boynton Beach isn’t just growing - it’s evolving.

But while the city becomes more diverse, it’s also facing a new challenge - affordability. The median household income sits between $70,000 and $76,000, yet the cost of living is about 16% higher than the national average. Housing tells the same story. While some neighborhoods are thriving with high-income growth - especially in areas like zip code 33473 - many residents are feeling the squeeze. Median rents hover around typical South Florida highs, and home values continue to shift in a changing market. In fact, the housing market has taken an unexpected turn. As of early 2026, home prices are down nearly 16% compared to last year, with a median price around $315,000. Homes are also sitting longer: about 95 days on average, compared to 75 days just a year ago.

So what does it all mean? Boynton Beach is at a crossroads. It’s becoming more diverse, more dynamic, and more culturally rich, but also more complex when it comes to affordability and growth. For some, that means opportunity. For others, it raises big questions about the future. Additionally, as we’ve been pointing out in many of our past newsletters, developers have been buying up much of the remaining land and building on it. The implications are clear: increased traffic, a growing population, and a damaging blow to our green spaces and wildlife.

Time will tell how much these changes will affect our city. One thing is for certain though. The Boynton Beach of tomorrow will look very different compared to the one we knew yesterday. A quiet land battle is brewing in western Boynton Beach. It’s one that most residents don’t even know exists. Since 2021, West Boynton Ranches Holdings LP has been steadily and strategically assembling nearly 180 acres inside the Agricultural Reserve along Boynton Beach Blvd, and their next move may be imminent. A vacant 30-acre tract which was once an equestrian property and farmland is the anchor site for a proposed multi-family development. It was rejected by the county in April 2025, then vanished from the agenda entirely. Recently planted rezoning and architectural signs along the boulevard suggest the project is quietly coming back to life.

The timing couldn’t be more critical as the corridor between SR7/441 and the turnpike is already buckling under rapid development. A new recreational complex, a 93-acre senior community, and a large apartment complex are all converging on the same stretch. Revised Agricultural Reserve rules now allow “essential housing” provisions that have cracked open the door for developers in areas once protected from overdevelopment. When this proposal lands before Palm Beach County Commissioners again the stakes for Boynton Beach residents couldn’t be higher. This time the outcome may be very different.

The Fight to Save Boynton Beach's Forgotten Historic Sites

A quietly introduced agenda item could have lasting consequences for how Boynton Beach protects its historic places and preservationists are sounding the alarm. Ordinance 26-011 proposes removing all references to “potentially significant” historic sites from the city’s land development code, eliminating a secondary tier of protection for historically valuable buildings not yet formally designated. For years, this two-tier system served as an early warning net, flagging vulnerable structures before they could be lost and this ordinance dismantles it entirely.

Supporters argue the old system was informal and confusing, while critics contend it was one of the last meaningful tools for protecting at-risk historic resources before the bulldozers arrive. In a city already threatened by South Florida’s “tear it down and rebuild” mentality, many residents fear this ordinance accelerates the erasure of old Boynton’s irreplaceable character. If approved, properties once flagged as potentially significant will vanish from the code entirely - no special recognition, no historic review, no second chances. One has to wonder what Major Nathan Boynton, who planted his roots here in 1894, would think about watching his legacy quietly written out of the law.

A major retirement development is quietly advancing through the Agricultural Reserve near Acme Dairy Road and Boynton Beach Blvd. Residents should pay attention, as Boynton is quickly changing. The Erickson Boynton Beach Retirement Community is planned for 93 acres of fallow farmland just west of the Florida Turnpike. This is adjacent to the upcoming Ellie at Logan Ranch apartments and across from The District development. Re-zoning was approved in May 2023 and the land sold for $53.5 million in mid-2024. The project has been moving forward largely under the radar ever since.

Part of Erickson Senior Living's multi-billion dollar national expansion, the campus would rival The Winsberg off Jog Road. It would include up to 1,262 units spanning independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing across six multi-story buildings. The stakes for local residents are real. Boynton Beach Blvd already handles over 52,000 daily vehicle trips. This is up from 40,000 five years ago. Adding a development of this scale will intensify pressure on roads, turnpike ramps, and intersections already straining under current demand. As of this writing, the land sits untouched with no construction activity, no loans on record, and no groundbreaking date announced. The Boynton Weekly will keep watching - because this story is far from over.

Before suburban development spread westward, Boynton Beach was Palm Beach County's dairy capital. Dairy farms stretched across what is now Military Trail, Jog Road, and the western communities, housing thousands of cows and supplying much of the county's milk. By the 1970s, development had replaced the farmland, and not a single dairy farm remains in the city today.

Florida’s Road Rules Are Changing: Speed Limits, Digital Registration, and Noise Crackdowns

Florida drivers may soon experience some of the most significant changes to state traffic law in years. During the current legislative session in Tallahassee, lawmakers advanced several transportation measures that could reshape how Floridians drive, register vehicles, and navigate traffic enforcement. The Florida House has already passed the legislation, which is now working through the Senate. If approved, the bills would head to the governor’s desk and, if signed, take effect in July 2026.

The most sweeping changes include higher highway speed limits, the elimination of yellow registration stickers, and a new prohibition on excessive engine noise in populated areas.

Faster Highways

One of the bill’s most debated provisions would raise maximum speed limits on limited-access highways — including the Florida Turnpike and interstate highways — from 70 mph to 80 mph. Speed limits on rural highways could also increase, from 60 mph to 70 mph.

Supporters argue the change simply aligns posted limits with how most drivers already travel, and that clearer expectations could improve traffic flow. Critics counter that higher speeds reduce reaction time, increase stopping distances, and raise the risk of fatal crashes. If enacted, Florida would join a number of western states where 80 mph limits are already the norm.

The End of the Yellow Sticker

For decades, Florida drivers have been required to display a yellow validation sticker on their license plate as proof of current vehicle registration. That familiar fixture may soon disappear. Under the proposed legislation, the state would move to a fully electronic verification system, eliminating the physical decal entirely.

Proponents say the switch would save money for county tax collectors and the state, reduce sticker theft, and spare drivers from fines when their registration is current but the decal has expired or gone missing. The change is largely a formality in practice — law enforcement already uses digital systems that instantly confirm a vehicle’s registration status, making the sticker redundant.

License Plate Reader Cameras on Private Property

A separate provision would permit the use of automated license plate reader cameras on certain private properties, subject to rules governing how the data is stored and used. These systems are already common in shopping centers, parking garages, and gated communities, where they are used to track stolen vehicles or identify suspects connected to criminal investigations.

Cracking Down on Engine Revving

Another provision takes aim at a noise problem that has grown increasingly contentious in communities across the state. The legislation would make it illegal for drivers to intentionally rev engines or accelerate in ways that create excessive or unusual noise, particularly in towns and cities. The measure targets behaviors commonly associated with street racing culture, modified exhaust systems, and aggressive revving at traffic lights, in parking lots, and in residential neighborhoods — often late at night, when the disruption is most acute.

Organized automotive events are explicitly exempt. Car shows, for example, operate in controlled environments where engine noise is part of the experience — and very much the point. A local example is the annual Muscle on the Beach Car Show in Delray Beach, where the “noon rumble,” a moment when all the engines roar in unison, is one of the event’s most anticipated traditions. That kind of celebration is not what lawmakers are targeting.

The focus is on the spontaneous, disruptive noise that residents have long complained about — the kind that rattles windows at midnight and has proven difficult for authorities to address. The new law would give law enforcement a concrete tool to cite offending drivers and restore some measure of quiet to affected neighborhoods.

If signed by the governor, all provisions are expected to take effect in July 2026.

The Boynton Beach Blvd corridor between State Road 7/441 and Jog Road has seen rapid development in recent years, and a largely unknown project may soon add to that transformation. Across from The District entertainment complex sits a sprawling parcel of open land at 11275 Acme Dairy Rd - 125+ acres of former agricultural property that holds a secret most locals have never heard of. In December 2023, a 39-acre portion of that land sold for $24 million to a Scottsdale, Arizona-based LLC, a striking contrast to its original 1980 purchase price of $100. Palm Beach County approved plans back in 2023 for a development called The Ellie at Logan Ranch, which calls for 314 apartments across six four-story and seven two-story buildings, with one-to four-bedroom layouts and a portion dedicated to workforce housing.

The project has had virtually no public buzz, surfacing only briefly in a few business journals and a Florida YIMBY article from August 2023. A $63 million construction loan from a private lender has already been secured, so financing isn't the holdup - though what is remains unclear. No drainage permits or construction plans have surfaced, and the property has sat quietly in limbo since early 2024. When it does move forward, combined with The District directly across the street, the views along that stretch of Boynton Beach Blvd will look dramatically different. The Boynton Weekly will continue tracking this and other under-the-radar developments in the area and will report back as credible information becomes available.

Beachfront land in Boynton Beach was once considered nearly worthless. In the late 1800s, settlers avoided it because the sandy soil was poor for farming and the area was dense with scrub. Farmers instead preferred the higher sandy ridge located slightly inland, which was far better suited for crops - a stretch that would later become known as Ocean Ridge. Today, that same oceanfront land ranks among the most expensive in Palm Beach County, a remarkable turnaround from just a century ago.

Florida lawmakers are advancing a transportation bill that could bring noticeable changes for drivers. If approved by the Senate and signed by the governor, the new rules would take effect in July 2026. One of the biggest changes would raise the speed limit on limited-access highways like interstates and the Florida Turnpike from 70 mph to 80 mph, while some rural highways could increase from 60 mph to 70 mph. Long before U.S. Highway 1 was developed, the route through Boynton was a rugged dirt path known as Dixie Highway. Narrow, bumpy, and often buried in deep sand, it frequently trapped early automobiles and made travel slow and unpredictable. With towns miles apart and even rumors of bandits along the way, the journey could be risky. Today’s smooth, service-lined highway is a far cry from the rough coastal road early travelers once faced.

Florida is famous for sunshine, beaches, and retirement communities — but as the state’s population ages, a more complicated issue is working its way into policy debates and local headlines: the surging number of elderly drivers sharing Florida’s roads.

The short answer: less than many people assume. Florida sets no maximum driving age. Instead, the state relies on a tiered screening system once drivers reach a certain threshold. At 80, drivers must pass a vision test every time they renew their license, confirming they still meet minimum visual standards. After 80, renewal cycles also shorten — from every eight years to every six. Physicians, law enforcement officers, and family members can flag concerns about a driver’s medical fitness to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which may then require re-examination or impose license restrictions.

These policies aim to thread a narrow needle between safety and autonomy — but critics argue the needle hasn’t been threaded well enough.

Where the debate is heading

As Florida’s population continues to age, lawmakers periodically revisit proposals aimed at senior driver safety. Ideas that have circulated in policy circles include more frequent license renewals after age 75, mandatory cognitive or reaction-time testing, daytime-only driving restrictions, and expanded access to refresher courses for older motorists.

So far, Florida’s legislature has resisted stricter mandates. Many lawmakers warn — not without reason — that harsh age-based restrictions could isolate elderly residents who depend on driving for groceries, medical appointments, and social connection. Losing a driver’s license, for many seniors, means losing independence itself.

But the pressure is building. Florida’s roads are already congested, and the number of older motorists is growing fast. Transportation experts increasingly argue that the answer isn’t just tighter licensing rules — it requires a broader strategy: smarter road design and clearer signage tailored to aging drivers, expanded ridesharing and senior transit options, and wider adoption of vehicle safety technologies that can compensate for age-related limitations.

For now, Florida continues to walk a careful line — one that will only become harder to walk as the population shifts beneath it.

The Intersection Scam Drivers Are Talking About in Boynton

Boynton Beach residents are warning about a surge of suspicious car accidents being discussed on the neighborhood app Nextdoor. Several incidents have reportedly occurred at intersections such as Woolbright Road and El Clair Ranch Road, as well as Lake Ida Road and El Clair Ranch Road. In these cases, scammers allegedly cause intentional collisions at intersections without traffic cameras and then file exaggerated or false injury claims under Florida’s no-fault insurance system.

Victims can still see their insurance rates rise for years, even if they were not responsible for the crash. Local law enforcement says they are aware of the issue but currently lack funding to install cameras at every intersection. Officials advise drivers to stay alert, consider using dash cams, and always contact police and obtain an official report if involved in an accident.

The Coquimbo, a large three-masted Norwegian sailing ship built in 1876, ran aground on the reef just offshore while carrying lumber and steel. The vessel had departed Gulfport, Mississippi, and was bound for Buenos Aires when the accident happened. Fortunately, all 15 crew members survived without injury.

A major residential development has been proposed for the former Falls Golf & Country Club. This property sits at the northwest corner of Jog Road and Hypoluxo Road in western Boynton Beach. The nearly 170-acre site, which stretches west to Hagen Ranch Road, closed permanently as a golf course in 2025. But now it’s the focus of a major redevelopment plan. Developer GL Homes has proposed an 800-unit residential community with about 500 single-family homes and 300 apartment units, including a six-story apartment building.

The developer purchased the land around 2014–2015 but was required to keep the golf course operating for at least 10 years before converting it to another use. Now that the agreement has expired, the company is seeking approval from Palm Beach County to move forward.
