📜 Can DeSantis Really Abolish Property Taxes for Floridians and Boynton Beach Homeowners?
Florida’s property tax reform push could be a game-changer for Boynton’s retirees and fixed-income homeowners.
Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing to eliminate property taxes on homesteaded properties over time, citing rising costs of living. This is great news for Boynton Beach’s 24,000 homesteaded properties and our large senior population (21% are over 65). A recent Palm Beach Post poll shows voters split 50/50. But local governments are pushing back since property taxes generate about $55 billion statewide.
One bill would exempt seniors from non-school property taxes, a game-changer for retirees on fixed incomes hit hardest by recent hikes. School taxes (46% of education funding) wouldn’t be touched, and revenue would still come from vacation homes, rentals, and commercial properties. Expect this on the 2026 ballot!
Millions in Florida Could Lose ACA Subsidies
Brace yourselves. Our Affordable Care Act premiums could skyrocket by up to 75% if Congress doesn’t act before the enhanced subsidies expire at year’s end. This hits us especially hard since Florida leads the nation with 4.7 million people enrolled in the ACA, and about 2.4 million of those folks are earning under 138% of the federal poverty level. These people desperately need these subsidies to afford coverage.
Because Florida never expanded Medicaid, the ACA has been the lifeline for lower-income residents to get healthcare, but if these subsidies disappear, premiums could double or triple. Let’s hope our lawmakers can find common ground before it’s too late!
New School Traffic Cameras Could Cost You A Fine!
Our Boynton Beach Police Department just rolled out 18 speed cameras near seven local schools, and honestly, it’s about time! After looking at traffic studies, it became crystal clear that too many drivers are flying through school zones, putting our kids and crossing guards at serious risk. The cameras will be watching during drop-off and pick-up times (30 minutes before and after school) on actual school days only.
If you’re caught speeding, expect a $100 citation in the mail. It won’t hit your insurance, but protecting our kids should be reason enough to slow down. Bottom line: let’s all do better and keep our youngest Boynton Beach residents safe!
