Emergency Alert: Food Shortage Looms in Boynton Beach — Will the Governor Act?
Local families scramble for meals as state leadership is summoned to avert disaster
Politicians are urging Governor Ron DeSantis to declare a state of emergency as the federal shutdown threatens food assistance for millions of Floridians, including 200,000 in Palm Beach County and 10% of Boynton Beach households. The four-week standoff means SNAP benefits won’t be distributed November 1st unless the government reopens. Florida lawmakers urged DeSantis to address this emergency affecting 3 million residents, including 1.5 million children.
About 79% of SNAP families include a senior, child, or disabled member, and 75% are at or below poverty level. The proposed State of Emergency would unlock state funds for food banks and temporary platforms to keep families fed. This falls to DeSantis despite the USDA holding $5 billion in contingency funds. However, there’s still hope the governor can provide a temporary solution, even as Washington remains silent.
