Is Boynton Beach Turning Into One Big HOA?
Residents Are Furious - And They're Not Going Down Without A Fight!
Residents in Boynton Beach’s non-HOA neighborhoods are pushing back against a sweeping update to the city’s Standards for Appearance and Maintenance, feeling the new rules mirror HOA-style restrictions they specifically moved to avoid. The crackdown covers lawn height, tree maintenance, roof and exterior wall conditions, outdoor storage visibility, and swale modifications - with fines and citations already being issued. A new parking ordinance that took effect February 1st added to the frustration.
Many residents feel the rules are government overreach, having chosen non-HOA communities specifically for property freedom. Director of Public Safety John Bonafair disagrees, insisting enforcement targets only properties that have been neglected for years. The city’s goal is a cleaner, more attractive Boynton Beach. For the full list of rules, visit boynton-beach.org or the city’s Facebook page.
Boynton Beach's Hottest New Development Has One Big Problem
Construction has begun on Shalimar at Boynton Beach, a mixed-use development at the 3500 block of Boynton Beach Blvd, approved by the city in July 2022. The project will feature roughly 250 apartments across 10 buildings of three to four stories, with one, two, and three-bedroom units estimated between $2,000 and $3,000 monthly. Amenities will include a clubhouse, fitness center, resort-style pool, EV charging stations, and up to 5,200 square feet of retail space, with a mid-to-late 2026 opening expected.
The location offers convenience, but comes with a significant tradeoff. The nearby Congress Avenue and Boynton Beach Blvd intersection is already one of the city’s most congested - with delays stretching up to seven minutes during peak hours. With the corridor continuing to grow and the Boynton Beach Mall’s future mixed-use conversion looming, traffic will only get worse. Shalimar offers an affordable, well-located option. However, if you choose to live there budget extra time for the commute.
