Massive AI Data Center Proposed Just Miles from Boynton Beach
Is the price of progress too high? Residents weigh in on controversial AI hub
A controversial AI data center called Project Tango could be coming to Loxahatchee - only 17 miles from Downtown West Palm Beach. The proposal calls for a 24/7 operation covering 3.7 million square feet on 202 acres off Southern Blvd.
At Tuesday’s County Commission meeting, residents packed the room with concerns: blazing lights causing skyglow, constant noise, massive water use (up to 5 million gallons daily), and air quality impacts. Many worry about environmental and health consequences hitting too close to home. Supporters counter with compelling benefits - secure digital infrastructure, high-paying jobs, and major tax revenue for Palm Beach County.
The decision? Commissioners hit pause, postponing the vote until April 23, 2026. They’ve ordered a full noise impact study and additional research to help settle the debate. For Boynton Beach residents, this isn’t some distant tech issue - it’s happening in our backyard.
Boynton Beach to Get Brighter: Officials Target Dark Streets and Safety Concerns
Boynton Beach may soon be getting a lot brighter. City commissioners are backing a lighting master plan to boost safety and complement over a billion dollars in downtown development. The timing is urgent - the city maintains more than 5,700 lights, but a recent check found nearly 100 broken fixtures along major roads. Officials plan to audit the entire system to pinpoint where better lighting is needed most, from high-crime areas to dark neighborhood streets. As Commissioner Thomas Turkin put it, poor lighting creates an environment that drives investors away rather than drawing them in.
