🌴The Consensus On Publix's New Open Carry Policy May Surprise You
Residents In Palm Beach County Have Spoken Out
If you haven’t heard yet, Publix made a quiet but significant policy shift last week. It came on the heels of a Florida appeals court overturning the state’s ban on open carry in late September. Publix announced it will now allow customers to openly carry firearms in all its Florida locations - including right here in Boynton Beach. The law still has restrictions: you must be 21 or older with no felony convictions, and private businesses can opt out if they choose.
Interestingly, Winn-Dixie, Costco, and Walmart have decided to maintain their ban on open carry, creating a split among major grocery chains. Shoppers and Boytnon residents are divided but the majority (about 90% according to a Palm Beach Post poll of over 1000 residents) reject the decision to openly carry.
Many locals feel uncomfortable at the thought of seeing guns while picking up groceries. They claim it will cause more harm than good. Other residents claim open carry is not a big deal and has been policy in states like Virginia for years. So far, most people report they haven’t actually noticed anyone carrying openly in the aisles. It’s still too early to know what the real-world impact will be, but one thing’s certain: this is a topic that’s going to spark plenty of conversation at the checkout line.

🤔 Did You Know?
Boynton Beach was named after Major Nathan S. Boynton, a Civil War veteran from Michigan who fell in love with South Florida’s sunny coast. In the 1890s, he built the Boynton Hotel, a wooden beachfront inn that attracted vacationers escaping northern winters.
Although the city proudly bears his name, Nathan Boynton never actually lived here year-round! He spent his winters at the hotel and returned north each summer.
