This Is Why Your Grocery Bill Feels Impossible Right Now
Beef, Coffee, And Produce Costs Surge While Paychecks Stay Flat
Food prices keep climbing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that food-at-home costs are up 26% since 2020 and nearly 2.5% in the last year alone. Local shoppers have noticed the surge - coffee is up 30% and beef has jumped 20% in just 12 months. Even cereals, breads, pasta, and produce now feel like luxury purchases. What was once a source of pride - feeding your family nutritious, hearty meals - has become a budget nightmare. People are leaving the table hungry, trying to stretch food to the next meal. Seniors, who make up 22% of Boynton's population, are hit especially hard on fixed incomes. Many residents now work multiple jobs just to afford basic groceries, and more are turning to local food banks for help. By December 2026, who knows what prices will look like?
Record-Breaking Freeze Will Hit Boynton Beach—Here's When
The coldest weather in nearly 15 years is heading straight for Boynton Beach. Temperatures will plummet to the high 20s and low 30s across South Florida. With fierce wind chill, it'll feel like the low 20s - potentially the coldest air felt here in over a decade. Records dating back to the mid-1900s are at risk. This Saturday evening could shatter Great Depression-era records from the 1930s, while Sunday morning may break marks set in the mid-1940s. The unprecedented freeze will also stun wildlife, especially iguanas. These cold-blooded reptiles will become paralyzed and fall from trees where they nest. Avoid parking under large trees during the cold snap - a falling iguana could seriously damage your car. It’s also recommended that during this cold spell, tropical plants and pets be brought indoors.

🤔 Did You Know?
Despite its warm, tropical reputation, South Florida has seen some extreme swings. The coldest temperature ever recorded in the area was 27°F on January 20, 1977, while the hottest reached 101°F on July 21, 1942. For perspective, the average January temperature here is a mild 67°F, making those extremes truly rare.

The 26% increase since 2020 is really staggering. What makes it harder is how unpredictable the spikes are, especialy with produce where weather events can double prices overnight. Saw this firsthand last winter when one cold snap basically wiped out lettuce supply for weeks. The gap between wages and food costs just keeps getting wider.
