Tough Choices Ahead for Boynton As Budget Shortfall Nears $5 Million
Rising costs and slow revenue growth force urgent action in Boynton Beach
Boynton Beach is confronting a $4.9 million budget shortfall, prompting swift action at City Hall. City Manager Dan Dugger and the City Commission confirmed the deficit last week, citing rising public safety costs, inflation, and slower revenue growth as key factors. To begin closing the gap, five senior staff members - including the City Clerk and IT Director - were laid off, saving about $550,000.
Hiring freezes and a proposed four-day administrative workweek are also under consideration. Officials say police, fire rescue, and utility services will continue uninterrupted, but balancing the budget without new revenue remains a challenge. Residents will have opportunities to comment during upcoming public meetings at City Hall.
Speed Trap or Safety Measure?
Frustration is mounting in Boynton Beach as drivers challenge what they call unfair school zone speeding tickets. Over the past six months, 18 automated cameras near seven elementary schools have issued $100 citations to motorists driving just 10 mph over the limit. The fines don’t add points or affect insurance - but they’re arriving in large numbers.
Residents say tickets are sometimes issued even when flashing lights aren’t active, since cameras rely on posted signage rather than visible signals. Many who appeal the citations claim the process feels one-sided and rarely successful. Countywide, more than 827,000 citations have generated nearly $66 million in fines. Officials maintain the system is designed to protect children, while a proposed state bill would require flashing beacons and extend the response time from 30 to 60 days. For many drivers, the real question isn’t speed - it’s fairness.
