Why Developers Are Betting Big On This Dying Mall Location
The Mall makeover that could transform Boynton Beach forever
Will this be Santa’s final sleigh ride to the Boynton Beach Mall? The 92.3-acre property at 801 N. Congress Avenue is teetering on the edge of major changes. After years of decline, the mall has reached a critical point, with throngs of shoppers, families, and even mall walkers disappearing in favor of e-commerce.
Built in 1985 and purchased by Washington Prime Group in 2014, the 40-year-old mall has become obsolete despite multiple renovations and anchor tenants. The City approved rezoning for the strategic corner location in 2020, acknowledging that consumers have moved away from indoor shopping venues.
The new plans include transforming over 1 million square feet of retail space into at least 1,400 residences, retail space, medical offices, restaurants, and a 400-room hotel. Some existing features like the church and movie theater may be preserved, and a fire station and green space are also being considered.
Washington Prime Group has already purchased the Macy’s building and secured participation from current tenants, including Christ Fellowship Church, while others are on short-term leases to ease the transition. This transformation will breathe new life into the Boynton Beach Mall and surrounding areas.
